Finally someone has taken the effort to study this little known area of martial arts and Persian History. Dr. Khorasani had complied copius amounts of research that is rarely seen in the western world. Two particular parts of the books were especially interesting to me. "Code of Chivalry and Warrior Codex" and "Catalog" give us insight that is so rarely seen and yet is more complicated and beautiful then what we often see in the west.

Da bekommt man natürlich gleich Lust in "Arms and Armor from Iran" weiterzulesen.

Persian Archery and Swordmanship is one of those books where the author is present but dosn't try to persuade the readers of his own views. In other words, Dr. Manouchehr Mashtagh Khorasani presents his material as it can be found it in the Persian literature and the illustrations. As it is mentioned in one of the forewords, his book therefore can serve as an introduction for the enthusiast as well as a reference source for researchers.

In 9 chapters, Dr. Khorasani describes varous concepts and weapons, which are essential for the Persian martial arts: code of chivalry, archery, mounted combat, spears and lances, swords, maces and axes, knives and daggers, short swords (qame & qaddare) and wrestling.

Compared to contemporary books about historical European martial arts, this book is clearly centered on historical sources, which means that Dr. Khorasani shows the application of the techiques in photographs, but there is no "didactic" presentation with lessons etc. The seasoned practitioner of armed martial arts will find lots of clues for his own developement or training nonetheless, especially in the part where Dr. Korasani shows how wrestling techniques can be applied to armed combat for training and war.

Most interesting besides those insights into a fighting system that is as profound and well-developed as its counterparts from Europe and the far East is the chapter about the code of chivalry, where the tradition of the zurxane (training halls) is described, which survives until today. Here, although most weapon training was removed due to restrictions, one still can see the principles of how to prepare the body (and the mind as well) for battle and to gain strenghth, flexibility and speed.

This book is a good supplement for open-minded practitioners of (western) martial arts, who want to widen their horizon, although for practical purposes a shorter, presentation of the material would be even better. There is much to be learned from zurxane, sword dances and Persian manuscripts and hopefully Dr. Khorasani will be as productive in the future as he is now.

We all enjoy wonderful miniatures: the illustrations of Persian manuscripts. Beside the general artistic advantages, these manuscripts give us an excellent idea about the types of weapons of that time. Unfortunately, there are not many similar sources available to non-professional lovers of Iranian weapons.  Dr. Khorasani's book gives an opportunity not only to get acquanited with the images of the unknown in the manuscripts, but we can also learn about the fighting techniques and the warrior's skills. And all these make the perception of history and heroes' feat more real and closer to us.

The book arrived today, and I have only had about an hour or so to explore it. But let me say that you have produced an amazing work here: a work of artistic beauty as well as scholarship and martial exploration. I look forward to truly exploring it and learning more about the fighting arts of one of the great.

I just received your last and SPLENDID BOOK "PERSIAN ARCHERY AND SWORDSMANSHIP- Historical martial arts of Iran".

I am very impressed by it and will certainly recommend it and write about it.

Your idea of completing the circle by not only showing the "tools of battle", but as well the ways they were used, is outstanding !

I have seen far to many books written on firearms by people who never even heard the roaring of an antique cannon, or felt the recoil cick of a gunbutt against their shoulder.
I am tired of seeing "tea-table-books" with nice pictures of swords, daggers or axes, written by people who do not have the slightest clew of how to hold such weapons in their hands, much less how to defend themselves with them.
This book of yours is like a challenging wind which made men raise their sails and venture into the open sea.
When I saw your pictures of how to fight with lances I learned myselve.
I did plenty of shooting and handling of all kinds of swords and daggers but I still will learn a lot from your book. That makes me happy as I am always hungry of knowledge and willing to learn!

Dr. Khorasani’s Persian Archery and Swordsmanship takes dozens of Iranian primary sources and identifies techniques which have multiple references in the texts and then matches many of them with depictions in manuscript miniatures allowing him to present a faithful reproduction of historical techniques in an array of martial arts.  This, coupled with an understanding of the chivalric systems of Persian warriors and detailed information on the weapons and armor they used makes this book, make this work not only the first to address the subject in English, but also a comprehensive and scholarly treatment of the Iranian system of martial arts.

Although I am an expert in Oriental Arms and not in Martial Arts, I feel as a duty to write to Dr. Manouchehr Moshtag Khorasani to congratulate him for writing and publishing such an important book like “Persian Archery and Swordsmanship – Historical Martial Arts of Iran”.

Dr. M.M. Khorasani is endowed with a special skill: completeness. I mean that he goes through the subject touching every feature of it and looking at it under many and different perspectives with an amazing competence.  It is an ability that appears in all his writings and books and enables them to be always at the top of any classification.   Vanna Scolari Ghiringhelli

-Persian Archery and Swordmanship.

Excellent and beautifully presented study of historical Iranian martial arts techniques.  Each family of techniques is described in its historical and cultural context, with several references and supporting evidence through historical texts and iconography.  Despite the scope of the subject, each section has been given a lot of attention.
While it states that it is not a self-training manual, it is very clear in its explanations and descriptions. The writing style is very straightforward and makes for pleasant reading. Hope to see more books in the future focusing on the usage of specific families of weapons. It is a fascinating book, and would recommend it to anyone interested in historical martial arts.
